Team TGP Bio

John Mellor, Principal Consultant

John is most at home outdoors, whether that’s on woodland trails, in open water, or exploring the countryside with his family. An experienced ecologist and qualified arboriculturist, he brings a dual specialism in habitats, protected species, and trees.

After studying Environmental Science at university, John began his career as a field ecologist, travelling across the UK to carry out surveys and assessments. His passion for trees led him to qualify in arboriculture, and he has since combined both disciplines to provide well-rounded advice on nature and green infrastructure.

Living on the Devon–Dorset border, John shares his love of the natural world with his wife, two young children, and their energetic dog — always ready for the next outdoor adventure.

Would be lost without:

Music – literally the soundtrack to life. Jazz, through to dub and electronica, he’d be lost without his CD and record collection

Favourite tree/plant:

Quercus robur (English oak). It’s a classic choice, but for good reason — nothing compares to the character and life of an ancient oak and its wildlife. For contrast, John also has a soft spot for sundews (Drosera), fascinating little carnivorous plants that are perfect for sparking curiosity, especially in children.
