TOWN COUNCIL (SOUTH)
Leighton-Linslade Town Council manages a network of public open spaces that sit close to homes, paths and well-used community areas. These spaces contain mature and veteran trees that provide character, shade and biodiversity. Their location near residential areas also creates clear responsibilities for safety and duty of care.
With earlier surveys needing renewal and new areas added to the estate, the Council sought support from The Green Partnership. Our experience in community-focused settings meant we understood the need to protect people while also safeguarding the wide benefits that trees bring. We recommended adopting the VALID Tree Risk Benefit Management approach. It provides a proportionate and evidence led basis for decision making and recognises both the low likelihood of harm and the high environmental and social value of trees.
The Green Partnership carried out a programme of Visual Tree Assessments across all mapped public open spaces in autumn 2025. Surveys followed BS3998 good practice and were aligned with the Council’s new VALID strategy.
Our work involved visual inspections across parks, green corridors and residential edge spaces. We recorded tree condition using GIS mapping and identified any obvious risk features in line with VALID guidance. We also provided clear and prioritised recommendations to guide proportionate management. Considerations relating to protected species and ecological sensitivities were included so that future works can be planned responsibly.
The survey confirmed that most trees are in good condition and continue to support local amenity and biodiversity. Only a small number required targeted management. The findings gave the Council confidence that its existing approach remains effective and that embedding VALID will help maintain a balanced and consistent view of both risk and benefit. The survey also provides a clear baseline for planning future maintenance in a structured way.
This project shows how community-centered arboricultural advice can maintain safe and vibrant green spaces without reducing their ecological or social value. By adopting VALID and updating its survey programme, Leighton-Linslade Town Council now has a sustainable and proportionate framework for long term tree stewardship. The result is a resilient and well managed treescape that continues to enhance neighbourhoods and support the wellbeing of local residents.
