Notting Hill Genesis, one of the largest providers of social housing in London and the South East, aimed to deliver on their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments. Their Sustainability Action Plan included a vision to create greater placemaking, enhance biodiversity, and improve ecosystem services across their estates. The Green Partnership was engaged to translate this vision into practical measures, projects, and management solutions.

A significant aspect of the project involved a detailed procurement exercise. The Green Partnership played a key role in designing specifications, guidance, training, and ongoing stewardship provisions to shape the specifications, commercial mechanisms, and partnership provisions for a new estates service contract.

This comprehensive procurement exercise encompassed several important elements:

1. Specialised Contractors: Delegating grounds maintenance away from wider estates services, such as cleaning, to enlist specialists dedicated to enhancing biodiversity.
2. Inclusion of SMEs: Ensuring the ability to include Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) as part of the management provisions across various geographies.
3. Structured Landscape Enhancements: A methodical approach to identifying, designing, and implementing landscape enhancements across their built estate with measurable outcomes for both nature and people against group level targets.
4. Collaboration and Best Practices: Building and sharing an ongoing collaborative environment for contractors, Notting Hill Genesis staff, and resident groups. This collaboration was designed to share best practices and continually improve the outputs aligning with the strategic objectives of the Sustainability Action Plan.
