TIMBER PRODUCTS PROVIDER (NATIONAL)
William Alexander Group (WA Group), a supplier of sustainable timber products and fuels across England, recognised that their business model might have negative impacts on the environment. They chose to take proactive steps to mitigate and reverse these impacts. They engaged with The Green Partnership to develop a strategy that delved into their impacts, opportunities, dependencies, and risks on biodiversity.
Our collaboration with WA Group began with an in-depth analysis. We worked closely with their team to identify the ecological impacts of their business operations, ensuring a clear understanding of the potential threats and opportunities to biodiversity. This phase involved assessing their supply chain and operating models to pinpoint areas where improvements could be made.
Building upon the analysis, we crafted a strategic plan that outlined key actions to mitigate the impacts on biodiversity. In addition to helping WA Group make substantial changes to their supply chain and operating models, a significant aspect of the strategy involved the creation of a habitat restoration project. This entailed transforming 25 acres of former arable land into a vibrant area of mixed native woodland, hedgerows, unimproved grasslands, scrub, and a small wetland. The project was meticulously planned and executed, involving baselining, design, project management, and ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
Collective efforts and support from The Green Partnership resulted in a remarkable 120% gain in biodiversity within the improved and newly established habitats. This thriving natural space is not only a triumph for nature but also serves as a valuable resource for local communities and team-building exercises for WA Group's staff. The project stands as a true testament to the positive impact that businesses can have on the environment, communities, and the natural world.
